12th April 2017 Patients’ sweet diabetes boost

CGMS AND TYPE 1 DIABETES: NATIONAL ROADSHOW

The Danii Foundation will be delivering educational sessions about continuous glucose monitors on behalf of the government throughout April and May, to 17 locations across the country

Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) are lifesaving devices that can prevent deadly hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia that can lead to ketoacidosis, explains the Danii Foundation.

On 1 April the Federal Government announced CGMs would be provided free to eligible Type 1 diabetics under the age of 21 through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).

“This new lifesaving technology will reduce the hassle of the daily finger-prick for people with diabetics who use this new product,” said Health Minister Greg Hunt in the announcement.

“It will also provide much-needed support for the difficult challenge of managing blood glucose levels, particularly in identifying symptoms of hypoglycaemia.”

In response to the funding boost, the Danii Foundation will be hosting the national roadshow in conjunction with Diabetes Australia and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), to spread the message about CGMs and how they can be used by people with Type 1 diabetes.

Founder and director of the Danii Foundation, Donna Meads-Barlow, says the initiative makes her “immensely proud of in what we have achieved together as a Type 1 [diabetes] community voice”.

“Our foundation is proud to be able to support Type 1 diabetics and their families and reach those who have not heard of CGM technology,” says Ms Meads-Barlow.

She has invited parents, carers, Type 1 diabetics, healthcare professionals, pharmacists, pharmacy staff and teachers to attend a local event near them.
