Calling All Type 1 Diabetics Under 21 years –
Are you Eligible for the Government subsidised Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) Initiative?

As part of their election commitment the Turnbull Government committed $54Million to roll-out life-saving blood glucose monitoring technology to Type 1 diabetics under 21 years. The devices are known as Continuous Glucose Monitors or CGM’s. These devices not only avoid Type 1 diabetics needing to prick their finger to test their blood sugar, they also can provide an alarm system to prevent deadly low blood sugar, hypoglycaemia that can result in a diabetic falling into a coma and dying in their sleep.

The DANII Foundation exists due to the death of 17 year old Daniella Meads-Barlow who died in her sleep in 2011 as a result of nocturnal hypoglycaemia, or ‘Dead in Bed Syndrome’.  Daniella’s parents, Donna and Brian Meads-Barlow established the foundation in 2012 and have led the campaign to see this technology publicly funded.

“The Government has taken a first but very significant step in making CGM technology available to around 4000 Type 1 diabetics aged under 21 years. We see this announcement as Danii’s gift to other type 1 diabetics.” said Donna Meads-Barlow.

The DANII Foundation is delivering an education and awareness national roadshow on behalf of the Government to 17 locations across the country.

“Our foundation is proud to be able to support Type 1 diabetics and their families and reach those who have not heard of CGM technology. The roadshow is starting in Hobart on April 10. We are hoping to see as many Tasmanians as possible.”

The Foundation is bringing together health professionals, CGM manufacturers and also Type 1 diabetics who are already using CGM technology. This will be a very informative and hands on evening where you can see exactly how this technology works, how it can improve day to day lives of those living with Type 1 diabetes and importantly who is eligible and how to gain access to subsidised CGM through the government funded initiative.
